"Careless Whisper" is a song by the English language singer George Michael. Information technology was written by Michael and Andrew Ridgeley[4] of Wham! and was released on 24 July 1984 on the Wham! album Make it Big.

The song features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered by a number of artists since its starting time release. It was released every bit a single and became a huge commercial success effectually the earth. It reached number one in virtually 25 countries, selling most half dozen million copies worldwide—ii million of them in the United States.[5]

Background [edit]

Composition and writing [edit]

In 1981, Michael was working as a DJ in the Bel Air eating house virtually Bushey, Hertfordshire.[6] Michael explained in his autobiography, Blank, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his babyhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have e'er written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys... With 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly where information technology showtime came to me, where I came up with the sax line... I retrieve I was handing the money over to the guy on the passenger vehicle and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for nearly three months in my head."[vii]

"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "There was a daughter there with long blonde hair whose proper noun was Jane. I was a fat male child in spectacles and I had a big beat out on her - though I didn't stand a hazard. My sister used to get and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane."[8]

"A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my start relationship with a girl chosen Helen," Michael connected.

Information technology had just started to cool off a fleck when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in simply around the corner from my school. She had moved in right next to where I used to stand up and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift habitation from school. And one solar day I saw her walk down the path adjacent to me and I thought – at present where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me. It was a few years later and I looked a lot different. And then we played a schoolhouse disco with The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this time she was that much older and a large buxom affair – and somewhen I started seeing her. She invited me in one day when I was waiting for my lift and I was ... in heaven.[8]

Michael observed that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the girl who didn't even meet me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted.

Then I went out with her for a couple of months but I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart – I had gone from existence a full loser to beingness a two-timer. And I think my sisters used to give me a hard fourth dimension because they found out and they really liked the first daughter. The whole idea of "Devil-may-care Whisper" was the first girl finding out nearly the second – which she never did. Merely I started some other relationship with a daughter chosen Alexis without finishing the 1 with Jane. Information technology all got a chip complicated. Jane institute out about her and got rid of me ... The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this 2-timer, just at that place really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the first girl – and I take seen her since – and the thought of the song was about her. "Careless Whisper" was us dancing, because nosotros danced a lot, and the thought was – we are dancing ... but she knows ... and it'due south finished.[8]

Andrew Ridgeley came upwardly with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday.[ix] They continued to work together on the music and lyric both at Michael'southward business firm in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman's aunt'south basement apartment in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.[ix] [x]

Demoing [edit]

The original demo was recorded past local music producer Paul Mex, in January 1982 alongside those for "Society Tropicana" and "Wham Rap! (Savor What Yous Do)" in the front room of Ridgeley's habitation (his parents' lounge turned into a makeshift studio) with Mex'south TEAC four-track Portastudio. Because most of the mean solar day was spent on Wham Rap!... and Ridgeley's female parent had returned dwelling house by that point, Careless Whisper had to be recorded in one take very chop-chop. It featured a Physician Rhythm drum machine, an audio-visual guitar (played past Ridgeley) and a bass guitar (played by Dave Due west), with Michael'due south vocal (recorded with a microphone attached to a broom handle).[eleven] [12] The overall toll of the recording was £20 (largely due to the rental cost of the Portastudio) and the duo landed a deal with Innervision past Marker Dean on the strength of the demos.[13] [14]

A more consummate and fully realised second demo was recorded on 24 March 1982 at Halligan Band Heart, Holloway, London with a bankroll band and a saxophone riff.[xv] However, on the same mean solar day, Michael and Ridgely were called over by Dean to sign a contract in improver to the record deal, which they did at a nearby greasy spoon café. Michael recalls of that day:

"One of the most incredible moments of my life was hearing 'Devil-may-care Whisper' demoed properly, with a band, a sax and everything. Information technology was ironic that nosotros signed the contract with Marker [Dean] that day, the mean solar day I finally believed we had number-one fabric. That same day we signed it all away. Simply you can never actually know what you are capable of, you can never really have that foresight."[fifteen]

Product [edit]

The vocal went through at least two rounds of production. The beginning was during a trip Michael made to Sheffield, Alabama, where he went to work with producer Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals Audio Studio in 1983.[16] [17] Michael was unhappy with the original version produced by Wexler, and decided to re-record and produce the song himself; the second version was the one ultimately released every bit a single.

After the backing runway and George's song had been recorded, Wexler had booked the top saxophone player from Los Angeles to fly in and do the solo.[18] "He arrived at eleven and should accept been gone by twelve", recalled Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bong. "Instead, after two hours, he was notwithstanding there while anybody in the studio shuddered with embarrassment. He just couldn't play the opening riff the style George wanted it, the way it had been on the demo. But that had been made two years before by a friend of George's who lived round the corner and played sax for fun in the pub."[xviii]

While the saxophonist appeared to be playing the part perfectly, Michael told him, "No, it'south nevertheless not correct, you lot meet..." and he would lower his head to the talkback microphone and patiently hum the part to him withal again. "It has to twitch upwards a little only in that location! Come across...? And not too much."[18]

Napier-Bong consulted with Wexler over Michael'southward dispute with the sax sound. "Is there really something George wants that's different from what the sax role player is playing?" Napier-Bell asked.[18] "Definitely!" replied Wexler.

"I've seen things like this before. There's some tiny nuance that the sax player is somehow non getting right. Although y'all and I can't hear what information technology is, it may exist the very thing that will brand the record a hit. The success of pop records is so ephemeral, so unbelievably unpredictable, we simply can't take the run a risk of beingness impatient. Just this sax actor'southward not going to get it, is he!"[xviii]

The version Wexler produced was released later in the twelvemonth, as a (4:41) B-side "Special Version" on 12" in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and Japan.

The record label Innervision was going to put out the Wexler version of "Careless Whisper" subsequently the Club Fantastic Megamix equally early as 1983. Song publisher Dick Leahy said that while he could not terminate the release of the Club Fantastic Megamix, he could finish the release of this single on the footing that as a publisher they "accept the correct to grant the first license of the recording of a tune of which he controls the copyright". He was unable to practise anything nearly the Club Fantastic Megamix because it was already released material. He said: "We knew how big that song could be, so information technology was necessary to upset a few people to cease information technology."[19] Towards the end of 1983, Michael was also committed to touring with Wham! to promote Fantastic, and so co-ordinate to him it would not have made sense to release "Careless Whisper" as a solo single in the middle of the tour, despite it being part of the setlist.[xx]

Michael later went back to London's Sarm Due west's Studio 2 to re-record the track, the backbone of which was done with a live rhythm section in i accept, with "loads of stuff bunged on [overdubbed] after" as Michael added, although the experience of it was basically live.[21] [22]

Michael elaborated on the song'due south product and how it turned out in the end:

"Jerry Wexler did i recording of "Careless Whisper" with me. So nosotros re-mixed that, which meant re-shooting the video then we completely re-did the track about iv weeks earlier information technology was due to be released. When we originally fabricated it I was totally in awe of Jerry Wexler and information technology was the first time that I had e'er felt like that about anybody that I'd worked with. Usually I have problem disarming myself that people know what they're doing. In this case I had to get drunk in order to sing, I was so nervous. Anyway, my publisher [Dick Leahy] and I had loads of discussions about whether the record was good plenty for the song and whether there was enough of me in it because information technology just did not sound like me. I said 'information technology'southward not bad. Jerry'southward done a groovy chore on information technology', and for the first time since nosotros'd started I was blind to what was going on considering the vocal was already two and a half years old and I only did not have a clue virtually where else I could accept information technology. Eventually I but thought, 'sod this. I'm going to go in and do it as if information technology had never been washed before with the musicians we commonly utilise and see what happens.' The track was much better because I was relaxed and I recall that our musicians did a much better job than the Muscle Shoals section". [22]

Subsequently hiring and firing several other dissimilar sax players, for which the BBC characterized as struggling to play all the notes with "the right amount of fluidity and yet breathe,"[23] Michael somewhen heard what he was looking for from Steve Gregory.[24]

During an interview with DJ Danny Sun, Gregory said he was the ninth sax player to attempt the riff. Gregory said Michael'south secretary had phoned him up midday and asked him to give the solo a attempt.[25]

"When I got there, information technology was about getting on to midnight, and there was another saxophone player in the studio, Ray Warleigh, who I knew quite well, and he said 'what are you doing here?' And George hadn't showed up. So Ray was a bit fed up. He said 'Well I'yard going, you tin can exercise information technology. I've had enough of waiting.' So he left and information technology was only myself, and (record producer) Chris Porter. And so I said I've had quite a long mean solar day, I'm going to do a better chore now than I volition at iii o'clock in the morning time, so can we try and practice something? So we went into the control room and George had already recorded it in LA with Jerry Wexler producing it and Tom Scott playing the saxophone line...he said this is what y'all got to do and he played this and I idea 'That is fantastic, why on Earth does he want to practice it again? I tin't play it as well as that!' And (Porter) said 'Oh, it'due south a new version, he's done his ain production, it's a new runway, it's got to be re-done, he but needs that on the new rail,' and so I went in the studio I tried to do it and my saxophone is an quondam Selmer (tenor sax) from about 1954 or something and I didn't take that meridian note. I didn't have a proper note on my saxophone, I had what we call a false fingering I had to practice to play it. So it didn't really sound that polish. It didn't sound that great. And so having been effectually for a while, having had a bit of experience, I suggested to him, I said, 'wait, if you lot took it down by a semitone, a very small amount, I'd have all the proper notes on my horn and we could come across how it sounds. And so that'due south what he did, he sort of did his calculations and took information technology downwards a semitone, and then I went out again and I played it in a lower key and when afterwards I finished it I went back into the control room and he played it back and he put it support to the proper speed, and as he was playing it back, George walked into the studio, and he said 'Oh, I think nosotros got it!' Then he pointed at me and said, 'You lot are number 9!'"

The officially released single was issued in Baronial 1984, inbound the U.k. Singles Chart at number 12. Inside two weeks information technology was at number one, ending a nine-week run at the top for "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.[four] It stayed at number 1 for iii weeks, going on to get the fifth acknowledged unmarried of 1984 in the Britain; outsold only past the two Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks, "Two Tribes" and "Relax", Stevie Wonder with "I Just Called to Say I Beloved You lot", and Band Assistance's "Do They Know It's Christmas?". The song also topped the charts in 25 other countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in February 1985 under the credit "Wham! featuring George Michael". Spending three weeks at the pinnacle in America, the song was later named Billboard 's number-1 song of 1985. The vocal was #1 on the smooth radio acme 500 songs of all time nautical chart – proving its iconic condition.

Despite the success, Michael was never addicted of the song. He said in 1991 that it "was not an integral part of my emotional development ... it disappoints me that you can write a lyric very flippantly—and not a particularly good lyric—and information technology tin hateful so much to so many people. That'due south disillusioning for a writer."[19]

Music video [edit]

The official music video (which uses the shorter single version instead of the full album version and was directed by Duncan Gibbins, who previously directed "Wake Me Up Earlier You Go-Get") shows the guilt felt past a man (portrayed past Michael) over an affair, and his acknowledgement that his partner (Lisa Stahl) is going to find out. Madeline Andrews-Hodge plays the adult female who lures George away. It was filmed on location in Miami, Florida, in February 1984[26] and features such locales every bit Coconut Grove and Watson Island. The terminal role of the video shows Michael leaning out of a peak floor balcony of Miami's Grove Towers.[27] [28]

A first original version of the video was edited with the Jerry Wexler 1983 version, and featured Andrew as a cameo, handing over a letter of the alphabet to a dark-haired George. This version had a more detailed storyline, but was and so re-edited later.[29]

Co-ordinate to producer Jon Roseman, production of the video was "A fucking disaster".[xxx] According to Michael's co-star Lisa Stahl, "They lost footage of our kissing scene so nosotros had to reshoot it, which I didn't complain about ... And so George decided he didn't like his hair so he flew his sister over from England to cut it and we had to reshoot more scenes."[31]

As the band felt they had "screwed up" the video, further footage of Michael singing the song onstage was later on shot at the Lyceum Theatre, London.[30] The video operation (1984 Version) was officially uploaded to George Michael YouTube channel on 24 October 2009. It has over 852 million views as of 2022.
